Shadow man

So I’m sitting here
Imagining myself in a Parisian cafe
Where the dark of the night seeps underneath the crevices of windows
Where the pavement doesn’t quite hold your fleeting steps
Where the chill of the night caresses you better than your worst lover
There you are
My darkness
The void that accompanies me better than past loves ever could
Nowhere to hide
Naked and alone is how I am with you
Yet safe and true is what I feel close to you
As my teacup hugs the curves of the dish, I can’t help but wonder
Are you my only eternity?
Am I just the lucky lady that meets you before your next companion?
If so, I feel I must have coined the wrong name to you my dear
You’re the side of the moon the sun and stars told me about
You’re the one that makes mothers bear tears
The one fathers fight against
We can’t hide from you
We never could
And we shouldn’t
Maybe you’re the most authentic me
The me that I am now is how I must be
But you’ve always just been
And I run
Why?
Because when I come to this cafe
Where the deafening silence meets the night
I am more myself when I’m with you
I wish you weren’t misunderstood
I wish I could escape to you more often
You pull me in
As the people cascade in and out this cafe
You remain, yearning
They run
They all do
But you will always be one step behind
Breathing on their neck
Never too far
You linger
I’ve made do with you
Stronger because of it
I give gratitude upon seeing you again
From time to time
Right here
In our cafe
Where the teacup hugs the dish

Where the pavement comes alive, just for you & I
